Close woven seats and backs can be done with many materials. The most common is binder cane. Seats may also be done in Ash, Oak, Hickory, and reed splint. One you do not see often is Willow Skein.
The most common pattern is the Herringbone/Twill. There are many patterns for cane furniture that may be woven. Types of chair caning materials used in close woven seats |
|
Hickory Splint Weaving—is done with hickory bark and used on rustic chairs. Hickory bark is a seasonal item and not always available. This is probably the strongest splint material.
Oak Splint—oak is available in machined and true splints. The machined splint is readily available, but the true splint is a little harder to get your hands on.
Ash Splint—is readily available in the machined form. Many of the old porch rockers were done in ash.
Binder Cane—as stated earlier binder cane is the most common material used in close woven seats. It comes in sizes from 4 to 6mm. It is the easiest of the materials to weave with.
Flat Reed—is also used because of easy access and when stained, it looks like the wood splints. Flat reed can not be used on outside chairs.
Willow Skein—is made from willow branches. The most common colors for seat weaving are Buff and White. The Skein may be dyed to enhance patterns. It is also seasonal. The skeins are hand made by a three step process.
