Chair cane is made from the bark of the rattan plant. The art became popular in the 1600’s. The process transitioned from rough wide pieces to a fine and even pieces.
Hand caning is done by weaving each piece through the holes on the frame (see picture below).
Machine cane comes already woven and is held in a groove by a reed spline.
Cane Furniture is as varied as the people that buy it. There is something for all. |

Steps in Hand Caning
Hand Caning is a seven step process. Step 1– is from back to front. Step 2– is from side to side. Step 3– is front to back or back to front. Step 4– is the first actual weave and is from side to side. Step 5– is the first diagonal weave. Step 6– is the second diagonal weave. Step 7– depending on the cane furniture age, before 1850’s most holes were filled with center cane. After the 1850’s the binder cane beading became popular.
Chairs with holes few and far apart, and the front post are raised and polished was probably done with willow skein. This type of cane furniture falls in the close woven category.
Machined cane chairs have a groove around the frame. It is replaced by cutting a piece a little larger than what is needed and pressed in to the groove. The cane is held in place with glue and spline.
